Clube Académico de Futebol, better known as Académico de Viseu, is the historic football representative of the city in the highlands, and was officially founded in 1914. The emergence of the Clube Académico de Futebol occurred in 1908 when a group of young enthusiasts from the city's high school and the Via Sacra College decided to create a sports organization in Viseu. However, it wasn't until July 14, 1914, that this sports organization took on an official character. It wasn't until 1929 that the club started playing football, a sport in which it achieved considerable national recognition, particularly since the 1970s when it reached the 1st National Division. Up until that point, the club had spent its existence in the lower tiers of Portuguese football, consistently achieving sporting successes that brought pride to the people of Viseu. In 2005, the club adopted the name Académico de Viseu Futebol Clube.
