The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of Centres of Excellence for post-graduate training in mathematical sciences, research, and public engagement in STEM. Established in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2003, AIMS transforms Africa through innovative scientific education and research. AIMS South Africa offers a one-year postgraduate course leading to a Structured Master’s in Mathematical Sciences, accredited by the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and the Western Cape, and delivered in collaboration with faculty from the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, and Paris Sud XI. The Master’s Programme provides a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge sciences and robust training in mathematical and computing research skills. Introduced in August 2023, the AI for Science Stream, in partnership with Google DeepMind, offers specialised training in AI and machine learning. Our goal is to develop well-rounded scientists equipped with excellent problem-solving skills, capable of creative thinking and genuine innovation. AIMS South Africa hosts an active research centre with a diverse agenda, from Machine Learning for Ecology to Algebra and Topology, addressing pressing scientific challenges and contributing to global mathematical knowledge. The AIMS House of Science promotes mathematical science and champions women in science. Through various initiatives, it makes mathematical sciences more accessible and encourages participation from underrepresented groups. Since 2003, the AIMS Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC) has trained approximately three thousand South African mathematics teachers and aims to reach thousands of township school learners, empowering communities through mathematical excellence. Located 50 meters from the Muizenberg beachfront, AIMS South Africa is an attractive destination for national and international researchers, frequently hosting workshops across a broad range of mathematical sciences.
