The Cardiovascular Research Centre is a non-government/non-profit unit operating out of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. Our Primary Focus is to promote research into non-communicable diseases related to cardio-metabolic issues across Sub-Saharan Africa. We are the first independently operated Research Unit in the University of Abuja. We started research activities in 2014, and have carried out/collaborated in over 18 research studies. Headed by Principal Investigator, Prof. Dike Ojji, Cardiologist, We have grown from 3 founding staff to over 40 including Researchers, Biostatisticians, Nurses, Data and Lab scientists, Pharmacists and others. Some of the research programs the Cardiovascular Research Unit has been involved with are listed below: 1. Comparison of Dual Therapies for Lowering Blood Pressure in Black Africans: This Creole Hypertension study was carried out across 6 countries with 10 investigative sites, from 2017-2018 in collaboration with GSK Open Lab. 2. Transforming Hypertension Treatment in Nigeria’ Study: involving 60 Primary Health Centers in the FCT, primarily aimed at reducing the burden of hypertension by empowering health care workers in the treatment of Hypertension at the Primary Health Care level. A collaboration with George Institute Australia, North Western University USA, University of Abuja and Resolve to Save Lives for a period 5 years. 3. Evaluation of Sars-Cov-2 Serology amongst Health Workers in the FCT: 2020 – 2021; a 6-month international collaborative Study between the University of Abuja and North Western University, USA. 4. Nigerian Sodium reduction Study: measure and evaluate the daily dietary salt intake of Nigerians from random sampling towards a reduction to the WHO RDA. A collaborative study with the George Institute Australia, North Western University USA. 5. Veronica Trial: Comparison of Low-Dose Triple Pill and Standard Care Protocols for Hypertension Treatment in Black Africans in Nig.
