The Catalan Volleyball Federation is the governing body responsible for directing and coordinating the practice, promotion, development and technification of volleyball, both court and beach volleyball in Catalonia. Volleyball appeared as a beach game in Catalonia during the 1920s, but it was not until the late 1940s when it became very popular on the beaches of Montgat, Badalona and Barcelona. However, its introduction was encouraged at school, especially at the Lycée Français in Barcelona, in institutions such as the Frente de Juventudes and the Sección Femenina, and in the police and fire departments, which practiced it as part of their physical training. Seeing that it was spreading throughout Spain and was a sport with its own international federation, the sports authorities thought it was time to organize it. After a brief period with the Catalan Handball Federation (1948-1950), volleyball was attached to the Catalan Basketball Federation in 1950. Gradually, new clubs appeared, especially in Barcelona and its surroundings during the fifties and sixties. In 1956 the Catalan Federation was constituted.
