Yakka was started by three high school students – Bagavthy Menon, Evie Griffiths and Hannah Ahn from Chatswood High School. It is as an online platform connecting high school students to work experience opportunities. Yakka was created as a result of seeing the flaws of the school work experience curriculum with a large portion of students not knowing what they wanted to do once leaving school and young people having a lack of industry experience. Careers education was being compromised. And something had to be changed. With only a 1/5 of students at their school participating in a work placement, two of the founders, similarly, not completing a placement and the other hating their experience, it was easy to say that there was an issue with the system. So, they decided to build a project to allow work experience to be more accessible, meaningful and worthwhile for students in their mission to empower high school students to explore a life beyond school.
