The Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) is a global center where marine science connects cutting-edge research, transformative education, and community engagement—each grounded in a sense of place and purpose. Together with researchers and community partners from Hawaiʻi and beyond, we advance a shared mission of better understanding and stewarding the world’s oceans and coasts. Located on the island of Moku o Loʻe, we are one of the world’s pre-eminent marine science institutes found on a living coral reef. Our Hawaiian hub offers unparalleled, year-round access to tropical ecosystems and ocean habitats across the Pacific. In a time of urgent, fast-paced change, our scientists are in a prime position to transform local research into global solutions. HIMB scientists study everything from microbes to mammals, and the connection from ridge to reef. As a community of over 100 passionate faculty and students from Hawaiʻi, the Pacific region, and the world, we embrace diverse perspectives and knowledge to collectively push the boundaries of scientific inquiry. Established in 1912, HIMB is a research institute of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
