The Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) is Australia’s largest materials research institute – linking world-class materials science research with industry to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing business and society. At IFM, more than 300 researchers work with 130 industry partners on developing materials solutions across recycling and circular economy, energy, manufacturing, mining, defence and health. IFM manages a diverse suite of world-class research facilities across Deakin’s Waurn Ponds and Burwood campuses. This includes IFM’s expansive collection of analysis and characterisation technology and equipment, and its pilot-scale facilities; the Battery Research and Innovation Hub – Australia’s largest dedicated battery research facility for battery design, fabrication and testing, Carbon Nexus – the world’s largest open-access carbon fibre research and manufacturing centre, and the Future Fibres Facility – home to the Southern Hemisphere’s largest and most advanced fibre research group.
