Coal Mining Museum in Zabrze

61 employees

The Coal Mining Museum in Zabrze is one of the largest and most frequently visited facilities in Poland and a leader in thematic post-industrial tourism in the whole Europe, with a unique offer of almost 10 km of pedestrian and water underground routes. The museum presents a valuable heritage of Silesian mining culture, is an Anchor Point of European Route of Industrial Heritage ERIH, and was also awarded, among others, by Europa Nostra for the best Conservation Project of 2019. In 2024, it was selected by the European Heritage Hub as one of 10 local good practices in the scope of the Triple Transformation of cultural heritage, Green, Social and Digital, which refers to all the museum's activities. By using 3D scanning, visualization and VR/XR techniques, the museum digitizes entire complexes of post-mining buildings, which are disappearing from the landscape of Silesia as a result of phasing down the mines. The museum is also an active participant in the EU Just Transition programmes.
