Our Story Petron in Malaysia traces its rich heritage to 1893 when it was first established as a Standard Vacuum Oil Company. Along the way, we have experienced many significant changes which included mergers and acquisitions, shaping us into who we are now. Today, we are Petron Malaysia, a part of Petron Corporation in the Philippines, an emerging and rapidly evolving Asian oil company. 1893 Standard Oil products were first sold in Peninsular Malaysia. 1921 Opening of the first service station in the capital city, Kuala Lumpur. 1961 Esso Standard Malaya was established. Construction started on Esso’s Port Dickson Refinery, a RM50-million project at the time. Standard Chemicals (Malaya) Ltd. was also established which was later renamed to Esso Standard Chemical (Malaya) Ltd. 1962 Formation of Esso Standard Malaya Ltd. (ESML) after Standard Vacuum turned over its Asian operations to Esso Standard Eastern, Mobil Oil Malaya (later Malaysia) was incorporated. 1963 Esso Port Dickson Refinery started operations. Esso Standard Malaya became a listed company with a RM24.5-million offer on the then Bursa Malaysia, Malayan Stock Exchange. 1967 Renaming of Esso Standard Chemical (Malaya) Ltd to Esso Chemicals Malaysia Sdn Bhd. 1969 Formation of Esso Borneo Sdn Bhd (EMBSB) to market petroleum products in Sabah and Sarawak. 1980 Port Dickson Refinery started using the Tapis Crude. 1987 Mobil opened Mobil Marts at its service stations in Malaysia. 1989 Esso opened its first convenience store. 1997 Esso launched self-service system at service stations in the Klang Valley. 2005 Smiles Driver Rewards loyalty program was launched. 2011 In August, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) entered a Sale & Purchase Agreement with ExxonMobil to purchase its downstream oil business in Malaysia, which is comprised of three companies: Esso Malaysia Berhad (EMB), ExxonMobil Malaysia Sdn Bhd (EMMSB) and ExxonMobil Borneo Sdn Bhd (EMBSB).
