The Portable Long Service Authority administers the Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme, ensuring eligible workers can build up long service based on time in their industry, not a single job. The scheme, which began on 1 July 2019, means workers in community services, contract cleaning and security can now accrue long service entitlements and take these with them if they change jobs, but stay in the industry. Under the scheme, employers in the covered sectors must register with the Authority and submit a return each quarter that provides details about their eligible workers. Based on this information, a levy will be calculated that employers must pay. This levy will cover the cost of future portable long service claims by eligible workers.
