Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) has been in operation in the country since 1936; initially as Ceylon Central Council Branch of British Red Cross Society and then as Ceylon Red Cross Society from 1949. In 1952, the International Committee of the Red Cross recognised the organisation to be admitted to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. SLRCS operates in the county's 25 districts, each with its own branch, with a total membership of 100,000 and 6,500 active volunteers. The organization acts without discrimination before, during, and after disasters and health emergencies to meet needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people in Sri Lanka.
