The Office of Treaty Settlements and Takutai Moana: Te Tari Whakatau (formerly the Office for Māori Crown Relations - Te Arawhiti) is focused on resolving historical Treaty of Waitangi settlements and supporting Takutai Moana determinations. Our vision is to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi | the Treaty of Waitangi. On 24 February 2025, the Māori Crown Relations portfolio was transferred from Te Arawhiti to Te Puni Kōkiri and Cabinet agreed to a new name for the departmental agency that better reflects its refined role. Te Tari Whakatau literally means the office 'te tari' where things are settled or determined 'whakatau'. Te Tari Whakatau supports the Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister and works with whānau, hapū, iwi, Māori and across the public sector to achieve its vision. Our values are Mahi Tahi (Working together) | Pono ki te Kaupapa (in good faith) | Atawhaitia (with humility and authenticity)
