At Wageningen Social & Economic Research, we are committed to advancing fair and sustainable agricultural and food systems globally. Our work focuses on understanding and addressing the complex social and economic factors that shape these systems. Sustainability and fairness in food systems are not automatic outcomes of the global economy. Achieving these goals requires deliberate choices, policies, and interventions. We explore critical questions such as: • What mechanisms and incentives can promote sustainability and equity? • How can economic systems evolve beyond wealth growth to prioritize well-being? • Which policy tools and strategies are most effective in driving systemic change? Our research investigates not only technical solutions but also the behaviors, norms, values, and cultural factors that influence choices and transitions. As part of Wageningen University & Research (WUR), we combine extensive expertise in agricultural practices, food systems, and macroeconomic analysis with cutting-edge knowledge in data science, behavioral change, policy design, and system transitions. This approach enables us to map opportunities within systems, develop actionable scenarios and transition pathways and provide science-based solutions to complex dilemmas. We believe in co-creating knowledge with our partners; farmers, communities, local organizations, companies, and policymakers to ensure that our insights are practical, actionable, and grounded in real-world challenges. We aim to contribute to a world where sufficient, healthy food is available for all within the planet's boundaries, ensuring fair incomes for producers. Through science-based scenarios, options, and pathways, we empower society and our partners to make informed decisions and take decisive action toward this vision. By combining rigorous research with collaborative engagement, Wageningen Social & Economic Research is shaping the future of food systems in the Netherlands, Europe, and worldwide.
